Sauerkraut

Sauerkraut. Women, eat up.

Korea has recently released a study that sauerkraut could be the next chicken soup…for chickens. In 11 out of 13 cases of bird flu, the chickens recovered shortly after being fed kimchi, a Korean dish very similar to sauerkraut. Scientists believe that the lactic acid and bacteria developed while the dish is fermented are what help fight off the flu in the chicken’s systems. Those in the Sauerkraut business like the Fremont Company located in the Great Lakes are reaping the benenfits from the research. Already producing 20,000 tons of sauerkraut each year, the company has experienced an 850% increase in sales. For years, sauerkraut producers have touted the benefits of the condiment, actually calling it a health food. There is no medical research proving that sauerkraut actually helps cure the avian flu; however, a recent study done by the University of Mexico points to evidence that the dish may help prevent breast cancer. According to the study, Polish women who eat four to five servings of the dish per week are 74% less like to develop breast cancer. So next time you’re in the condiment aisle, take a trip to the end a pick up a bottle of fermented cabbage. You may appreciate it later.
