Operation Offset

With a massive, GOP created deficit, a war with costs quickly approaching a quarter of a trillion dollars, and now reconstruction efforts in the wake of several massive natural disasters, Congressional Republicans are beginning to realize that money isn’t free. Operation Offset is a House Republican sponsored movement that aims to “inject into the debate a serious consideration of significant budget cuts,” as Republican Study Committee Chairman Mike Pence (R-IN) puts it. What programs are on the GOP’s chopping block? Here are just a handful of the proposed changes (Bush’s tax cuts, of course, are not in jeopardy).

* National Endowment for the Arts – eliminated.
* Corporation for Public Broadcasting – eliminated.
* Hydrogen Fuel Initiative and Clean Coal – eliminated.
* National Science Foundation Math and Science Program – eliminated.
* State Grants for Safe and Drug-Free Schools – eliminated.
* School lunches for students 350% above poverty line – eliminated.
* NASA moon mission – cancelled.
* Cut all funding for subsidized loans to graduate students.
* Cut all funding to the National Endowment for Humanities.
* Cut almost all AMTRAK funding.
* Cut global AIDS funding by half a billion dollars.
